RiverBlast! 2010

Spring will be here before we know it, and with it comes RiverBlast! We had a great turnout last year for the Commissioning of the USS Water Witch (pictured), and hope everyone will return for this year's festivities.

This year's RiverBlast will take place March 20-21 April 17-18, with an increased focus on living history and demonstrations. Other activities will include boat rides on the Chattahoochee River, a scale ironclad battle, cannon firings and much more.

More details and a tentative schedule will be posted soon.

Cool History to feature Water Witch Capture

Cool History – The Dramatic Capture of the USS Water Witch, a living history weekend is set for the National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus on the Friday and Saturday following Thanksgiving, Nov. 27-28. Scenes from the capture of the ship by the Confederate Navy will be reenacted onboard the rebuilt full scale model of the Civil War ship outside the museum.

A living history camp with demonstrations of period military activities from naval blacksmithing to rope making will also be in the area of the ship. Civil War era sailors and Marines will be on hand to talk to visitors on both the Friday and Saturday following Thanksgiving.

The photo shows a previous Cool History program where scenes from the capture were reenacted.

Cool History to feature Navy Medicine

One of Port Columbus's most popular programs is set to run the weekend of the 4th of July. Lawrence Jones, who portrays a US Navy surgeon will be set up to do surgery in one of the ship environments in the museum that weekend and will demonstrate how surgery was done during the Civil War aboard ships.

He will also be talking to visitors throughout Saturday and Sunday about various medical topics so visitors are encouraged to bring their questions.

Cool History is a series of summer programs at Port Columbus, most of which are conducted indoors, where it's..........cool.
